Driver's Education Program

E-mail PDF

The Quaboag Driver’s Education Program offers three classroom sessions per year and an ongoing on-the-road phase. Completion of these two phases allows the participant to receive a driver’s education certificate which allows him/her to apply for their licensure test after they are 16.5 years of age. Otherwise, candidates for licensure must apply after their 18th birthday. There are several advantages to enrolling in the program:

Quaboag Driver’s Education Program

  • serves 60 to 75 new drivers each year
  • gives students a convenient option
  • less expensive than neighboring driving schools
  • flexible: can take classroom here and on the road elsewhere
  • three classroom sessions per year
  • on the road ongoing with delivery of new car
  • curriculum covers every driving aspect required by RMV
  • current videos depicting real life scenes and situations
  • mandatory parent meeting

Students are responsible to attend all 30 hours mandated by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles

REQUIREMENTS

There are several requirements new drivers must complete in order to receive a certificate from the Registry of Motor Vehicles through the Quaboag Driver’s Education Program. Firstly, they must complete the 30 hour classroom session. Classes missed may not be made up individually. Instead, the student must attend the specific class they missed in the next offered session.  For example, if they missed class #3 in the fall session, then they must attend class #3 in the winter session. Students must also sign in and out at the beginning and end of each class. Also, a parent of the student must attend a mandatory parent’s class scheduled towards the end of the session. This must happen before any on the on-the-road appointments can be scheduled. These are all requirements of the Registry of Motor Vehicles and are not Quaboag’s.

ON-the-ROAD

The On-the Road phase of Driver’s Ed. consists of 18 hours for those new drivers that received their permits on or after 9/1/07. Namely, these consist of 12 hours driving and 6 observing. Students must have completed the 30 hour classroom course and have at least 20 hours of driving time with their parents/guardians. (This is half of the R.M.V.’s required parent/student drive time of 40 hours.)  Students cannot schedule their license appointment within 6 months of receiving their permits which they receive once passing a written test on or just after their 16th birthday. The cost of Quaboag Driver Education is $100.00 for the classroom and $350.00 for On-the-Road. Students can take the On-the-Road portion elsewhere.

PROGRAM POLICIES

To ensure the highest standard of instruction, the Quaboag Driver Education Program follows the following policies in its classroom and on-the-road phases of its program.

  • The QDEP reserves the right to expel any student who      demonstrates an unwillingness to comply with the teacher’s directions. Disrespect, non-compliance, or disruptiveness will not be tolerated at any level and will result in immediate dismissal. A refund will be awarded if a written request is received as a result of the dismissal.
  • The QDEP O-T-R reserves the right to cancel, or postpone any driving appointment which was made in advance due to unforeseen circumstances or weather conditions.
  • The QDEP O-T-R reserves the right to arrive at the arranged site anywhere between 15 minutes prior to 30 after the appointed time.
  • The QDEP reserves the right to postpone any class session due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Classes will be scheduled at the teacher’s discretion.
  • RMV road-test appointments can be scheduled with the Driver Ed. Car for a fee of $50.00. Subsequent tests will be $25.00 per appointment. RMV appointments can be scheduled through QDEP for no cost.

These policies may be furnished in writing upon request.

DMV on the ROAD PHASE

Your child is about to begin the on-the-road-phase of Quaboag’s Driver’s Education Program.  It is very important for you, as your child’s caretakers, to understand that the on-the-road phase is only a part of the driving educational experience your child must participate in. The Registry of Motor Vehicles recommends that new drivers get behind the wheel with their parents for 100 hours. This is in addition to the 12 hours of “behind the wheel” and 6 “observing” hours they will do with the director of drivers ed.

The basic scenario for new drivers is as follows:

  1. Receive their permit from the R.M.V. on or near their 16th birthday. (This includes a written test they should study for.)
  2. Immediately drive with their folks as much as possible.
  3. Arrange driving appointments with the director as they get closer to the end of their 6 months with their permit.
  4. Schedule an appointment with the R.M.V. after the 6 month anniversary date of receiving their permit.
  5. Take a successful road test and receive their license.
  6. Be a defensive and successful driver!
